Learn How to Sew: Zippers

Hello Everyone!
I have been working on a sub-project for some time now. I’ve just finished it and it’s now published. I hope you’ll like it.
You may either like sewing or just enjoy window shopping, I think all of us have a soft
spot for fashion, good designs, or putting it simply: pretty things to watch.
Personally I like getting inspired by creative designs especially when I’m sewing. And I wanted to share with you some sort of a scrap book for my inspirations. Finally I managed to design a webpage specificly focusing on the things I like about fashion, style, outfits, accessories, shoes etc.
You may either enjoy going through the photos, or use it as an inspirational lookbook for your sewing projects, up to you.

I finally finished my retro dress from Butterick patterns B6582. I’ll be honest with you. Although the illustrations on the pattern envelope of elegant feminine look of 60s do get you excited about buying this pattern, you don’t get that retro look when your project is finished. Or maybe, it’s just me lacking the elegancy :)
Still, my love for black and white dresses made me enjoy this dress a lot, with or without the retro vibe :)
Sewing Steps for Butterick 6582 Pattern
The pattern instructions ask you to gather the shoulders. But since my fabric wasn’t some sheer cotton, I thought gathering the fabric on the shoulders would look “thick”. So, instead, I made 2 pleats. As I proceeded with the dress, I realized that it was the right move.
I have always admired the fashion in 1960s. When I started sewing, I started to get more interested in the history of what we wear. After all, fashion is one of the biggest driving forces of world economy today. And many of us, simply LOVE it :)
Enjoying the pictures from that era for so long, I finally decided that I should learn more about sixties fashion. And the more I read about it, the more I understand that it really was a “decade that broke many fashion traditions, mirroring social movements during the period”.
I was adoring the lace skirts and dresses so much for so long! Finally I managed to sew one for myself. I could have sewed a loose fitting gauze and a chic and colorful facing inside (which is definitely on my to do list!) but I couldn’t find a good quality gauze fabric in the color of my liking yet. So I took the harder path and made a skirt with cotton lace bands…
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a “sensei” about anything… But as a person who educated herself on how to sew only through the internet, I love sharing the things I learned or the tips I (re)invented.

Hello everyone! I’m not just saying that “sew your style and wear a designer” because it sounds nice… It is really very easy (and fun!) to create nice outfits for yourself just by using basic sewing patterns!
Would you like to see an example? Couple of weeks ago I made a very fancy top by using a simple t-shirt pattern. Let me show you how it’s done…
I tend to use invisible zippers almost in all my outfits. But when I first started sewing, I could never keep it “invisible”. I gradually realized how to do it properly by trial-and -error method.
I literally ADORED this skirt pattern! (Vogue / Rachel Comey v1247)
It’s very easy, very comfy, very practical. You can sew it in an hour! :)
I chose this fabric along with my birdy print top , but it turned out to be one of my favorites.
When I first started learning how to sew (I’m still learning something new each day) one of the webpages in my top reading list was sweet Canadian “sewaholic” Tasia’s page. In here, I learned quite a nice way for making buttonholes. After practicing this method couple of times, I started using it not only as a buttonhole, but also on inseam pockets for pants, dresses, coats etc. If you’d like to learn how to do it properly, you may take a look at Tasia’s tutorial:
When I first laid eyes on this in Vogue Patterns I loved it. I thought it could be a handy top for everyday use. The pattern is again from a famous designer: Rachel Comey.
This pattern was one one my recent purchases in the last sale from McCall’s patterns. It was on my to do list for so long. The pattern is amazing. According to the fabric you use, you can sew it for any season. I think if I cut it a little bigger next time, I can even use it as a real trench coat.
This was my first attempt in sewing a trench coat, thus I had no idea how much fabric is needed for such a pattern.
Instead of buying fabric according to the pattern, as almost all normal people would do, I tend to lose myself in the fabric store and buy whatever I fall in love with at that second and then try to figure out which pattern would be better for that later on. So, after I cutthis pattern, I had no idea about what to do with the existing fabric choices.
